Our Approach

Jersey City’s Trusted Mentorship & After-School Program

Kismet of Kings is a vital mentorship and after-school program in Jersey City, which provides unique services to Black and Brown male students aged 11-18. The program caters to this demographic, many of whom come from low-income households, by offering academic and social learning opportunities. Kismet of Kings employs a constructivist learning approach to engage vulnerable youth through mentoring and educational programming to enhance their college readiness and foster an entrepreneurial mindset.

To provide our young men with the necessary life skills to succeed, Kismet of Kings seeks out volunteers and mentors from diverse professional backgrounds, including those involved with the legal system, public service, law enforcement, and the private sector. Our goal is to bridge the opportunity gap and empower our students to envision and achieve their aspirations.

Mentorship Model

Kismet of Kings fosters positive mentor/mentee relationships with community leaders in Jersey City to promote academic success, positive self-image, and strong character traits that cultivate productive members of society. We provide constructive modeling and diverse opportunities for teens to explore cultural-historical pedagogy. Kismet of Kings is committed to a core set of principles and training curriculum that includes:

  • Black/Latin History: We promote a keen awareness of our participants' spiritual connection to their ancestors. By understanding who they are and where they come from, they can confidently navigate the world and pursue success.

  • Life Orientation Circle: We equip our students with necessary life skills, such as typing and resume writing, to successfully navigate through various aspects of life. This circle also teaches participants how to play positive roles in their communities.

  • Mentorship: Our mentors provide validation and support as our young men navigate their inherited life experiences. The knowledge, advice, and resources shared by mentors are critical to the optimal development of each participant.

  • Financial Literacy: We teach participants fiscal responsibility by providing education on building wealth, credit management, and budgeting to govern their everyday lives.

  • Hip Hop Pillars: Our program integrates the tenets of Hip Hop and current cultural zeitgeist to improve literacy skills.
